Issue XII – “6 months old, where has the time gone?”
That’s right folks; I’m a whole 6 months old already! Can you believe it!?! I can’t! I’ve changed so much from when I was just born. Mom was just telling me the other day how little and cute and cuddly I was when she brought me home, weighing only 12lb then. Now, I weigh in at 82lb and growing larger every week! Mom says I’m still cute and cuddly even though I’m bigger now! It just makes it harder for her to be able to carry me! Though, somehow she manages because I still don’t jump in and out of the car for her. She is talking about getting me a ramp to make it easier for me (and her)!
I’ve learned so much in the past six months. I learned how to sit, lay down, and shake. I sort of know my stay and place commands. I know and actively work on the it’s your choice command, where I make a good choice not to take things off the table or beg for food, and when I don’t, then I get my treat reward. I’ve learned how to walk on a leash nicely, and usually remember to do so when we are walking! I’ve learned to let Mom brush my teeth, clean my ears, and trim my nails without giving her any fuss about it. I’ve lived through my first fall and loved chasing the leaves and running in the back yard with my Mom and Dad in the cool crisp air of the fall. I’ve experienced what snow is and what the biggest snowstorm in probably my life and maybe even in my Mom’s life feels like with the SNOWvember wall of snow storm. I’ve seen what Halloween is and dressed up as a bumble bee, a costume that definitely won’t fit me next year! I’ve experienced the joy of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, and dressed up like Santa Claus for our family Christmas card picture! I’ve learned about the love that Valentine’s Day celebrates and am looking forward to the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday too! I can’t wait to see what the next 6 month brings me! Hopefully some nicer weather!!!
So, aside from celebrating my 6 month birthday, I’ve been keeping busy going to work with Mom still, and I’ve started a new class at my school again. It’s pretty much like my first class, but there is homework in this class. I guess that’s what college is all about! There are more new faces in this class too. It’s hard not to be distracted by them when I am trying to focus and learn. Sometimes, I get too excited and try to break away from my learning and play with my classmates! They all seem like such nice dogs; I wish we could play sometime and not always have to learn something! Mom says it’s good for me to learn though; she says it burns mental energy. I don’t have much energy, physical nor mental, period! I’m a pretty laid back sort of guy. In class this week, my teacher even had a hard time keeping me in a sit position for an extended period of time because I kept wanting to lay down after a few seconds. I didn’t see a problem with it, I was just getting comfy since it seemed like we were going to be there for a while!
On my off days, when Mom and I don’t have to go to work, I usually help my Mom run errands around town. We usually go visit Mom’s grandma, so that would be like my great grandma I think. This week though, the man that runs Great Gramsy’s senior apartment complex wouldn’t let me in for a visit. I was just being friendly to him and coming to say hello, but he wouldn’t even pet me and he told Mom that I was too big to be in the apartment. Apparently only dogs less than 20lb are allowed. I think that’s just plain old discrimination! I’m a good dog. I don’t make any noise and I’m completely house trained. I was quite disappointed not to be able to visit with Great Gramsy as usual this week, Mom and Gramsy were sad too. Mom pulled her car up to the window, so that Great Gramsy could at least look out the window and see me from there. I hope that when the weather is nicer, maybe she can come outside for a visit or maybe even come over to our house for a nice visit.
I did get to visit my Aunt Autumn, Uncle Jamie, and cousins, Abby, Jake, and Sam this weekend though! That was super fun! I love going to their house because it means I get to play with Abby! She is the most fun! She lets me chase her and she chases me. She even will play tug and fetch with me, which are like my two most favorite games! They have all the best toys there too! They have a yellow Labrador named Chloe, and because she is a little older now, she doesn’t play with her toys all that much, but she has a whole big basket of good ones that she is nice enough to let me borrow when we’re their! She even lets me take my most favorite ones home with me. She is so nice! I’m getting better at leaving her alone too. I know she is old and needs her rest, but it’s so hard for me to resist playing with her.
You know who else is fun to play with at their house? The two little tiny humans named Jake and Sam. They smell so good and taste even better! Sometimes I sneak a lick of their fingers, which are usually covered in some sort of food substance. They also crawl around on the ground using what appear to be 4 legs like I have, but then sometimes, they sit up and even stand on 2 legs, like the other humans. I think they are like dogs when they are crawling, which makes me want to play with them, but the adult humans all tell me to be gentle and not play with them like they are dogs. It’s really confusing if you want to know the truth, but I think I’m catching on. They tell me that when they are a little older, we’ll be able to play fun games together like Abby and I play now.
